NEW BUSINESS:
Fall Conference:
The Fall Conference, From Deployment to Employment "What Employer's Need to Know about
Military Leave and Veterans Returning to the Workforce", will be held on Tuesday, September
11th at the Holiday Inn from 8:00 - 1:00. The cost will be $35 and will include a
continental breakfast and lunch. The first speaker will be from the Veteran's Center and
will be discussing integrating employees back into the workforce. The second speaker will
be Jim Sullivan from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. He will be discussing
legislative updates with respect to military affairs and military benefits. Then there will
be a guest panel of those returning from war, and employers who have implemented best
practices to integrate Veteran's into the workplace.
Board Succession Planning:
Succession planning was discussed. Kathy Chalupsky is the 2008 President-Elect, Kim Burke
will be Past President, and the President-Elect spot for 2009 is open. Kathryn Koch was
going to be VP of Finance, but is not sure if she will have enough time to take it on.
Bonny Ratajek doesn't know what her employment situation will be and will not be able to
take it on either. We will need to find a replacement for that position. Jennifer Mencl
will continue to be the Director of College Relations and the HR Games contact. Wayne
Lindberg will continue as Director of Legislative/Governmental Affairs, Tracy Larsen will be
VP of Administration. Patricia Stolee will be Director of Marketing. Sandy Shea will
continue as Diversity Director.
Kathy Chalupsky had a question regarding paying speakers for our educational luncheons. It
was agreed that it is definitely an option and is something we can do within reason and that
it should be brought to board for approval if this is something we want to pursue.
Kim Burke will list the open Board positions in the newsletter and announce at the upcoming
meetings. Terry McGillvrey is interested in joining the Board, she is currently on the
Newsletter committee. Robbin Champaigne is also interested in joining the Board. Kim will
contact and discuss the open positions with Terry and Robbin. Terry may be interested in
the Community Relations position. We will need to fill that position for 2008 as well as
the Director of Programs.
MN SHRM Conference:
We discussed providing a Chapter Basket for the fall SHRM conference again this year. It
counts towards dollar contributions on our CAP. Kim has tickets to sell for the basket and
will bring them to the next meeting. It was agreed that we will ask Molly Haugen if she is
interested in putting a basket together for us again this year. She's creative and enjoys
doing it, and is good at soliciting donations. Patricia brought her laptop with a
promotional video on the SHRM conference. It will be held October 14th - 16th at the St.
Cloud Civic Center. Kim also showed us the new SHRM logo.
Fall Newsletter:
Jennifer Mencl is proofing it now. It will go out in the next few days.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Financial Report (Bonnie Ratajek):
Bonny distributed and discussed the financial report. Kathryn Koch moved to approved and
was seconded by Kathy Chalupsky; board approved, motion carried. She also mentioned that
Steve Korby called her and suggested having NHRA sponsor the final golf hole for the Golf
Outing. Kathy Chalupsky made a motion to approve and Wayne seconded. $715 is going to
FlexWork! There were 16 golfers this year. We would like to try to get more participation
next year.
Diversity Report (Sandy Shea):
Sandy will work with Kathy to determine a date to bring in a diversity speaker for one of
the upcoming luncheon meetings. She will also provide articles on diversity for the
upcoming newsletters. She also wants to give a brief update at one of luncheons regarding
an audit her company just went through. 50 of their staff members were interviewed over a
two day period. Sandy will also forward information relating to diversity to Patricia to
post on the website.
College Relations (Jennifer Mencl):
There was a discussion regarding trying to get the HR games back in Duluth. Patricia will
see if the State Council is going to send out RFP's and open up the bidding process or how
they are going to handle it. Jennifer will invite Stacy to the September meeting.
Communication Marketing, & Webmaster Report (Patricia Stolee):
Patricia will continue with the marketing and webmaster piece for the remainder of the year.
She is continuing to send out e-mails and update the website with valuable information.
Community Involvement Report (Missy Kuhlmey):
Missy Kuhlmey was unable to attend the meeting and did not provide a report.
Membership Report (Roxanne Adamczak):
Roxanne Adamczak was unable to attend the meeting and did not provide a report.
Professional Development (Kathy Chalupsky):
The October meeting is booked. Jen Birch from the Chamber would like to discuss an
assessment they are doing to determine the best employers in Duluth. There was some
discussion surrounding this topic and if it is a fundraiser for the Chamber. Kathy will
review the content of their presentation and see if it appears to be a sales pitch and how
much value it will be adding for our members. Kathy also has two other speakers lined up
for the remainder of the year, but hasn't assigned them to a specific date yet. The first
one is Jim Skoog, he would like to discuss how HR professionals can work strategically with
employers regarding the Pandemic Flu and will tailor the pieces that HR people need to know.
The second speaker is Amy Burnstein, she would like to speak on ethics versus religion in
the workplace.
Legislative Affairs Report (Wayne Lindberg):
Wayne had the information regarding the new Personnel File law posted on the website. He's
also been looking for possible speakers to bring in for one of our luncheon meetings. This
can possibly be tied in with diversity too.
OTHER BUSINESS:
Kim sent the IRS change of address in at the beginning of July.
A motion was made by Kim Burke to adjourn the meeting at 12:58 p.m.; seconded by Jennifer Mencl.
Respectfully submitted,
Tracy Larsen
Assistant VP of Administration
