January 14, 2010

Call to order 4:30 p.m.
Present:
Laurie Pinther, Wayne Lindberg, Terri McGillvrey, Wendy Sersha, Judy Aspling, Pam Grover, B.elana Aedan, Linda Olcott, Kathy Chalupsky, Patricia Stolee, Heather Duval, Steve Korby, Sandy Plante

Review/Approve Minutes: December 2009: Tabled until February 2010 meeting

Treasurer's Report (Pam Grover):
- Review of PayPal, Savings Certificates, Checking balances.
- Invoices for 2010 member dues will be mailed in January.
- Fall Conference: We had 45 paying attendees; with associated expenses, we made $255 in profit.
- Compiling year end membership for CAP.
- Holiday Inn: Increase in cost for monthly meetings. We currently pay $10.20 per meal; the cost will go up to $11.19 per meal. It was
suggested that we reevaluate our pricing next year.
- Financials were approved.
College Relations (Heather Duval absent):
- Heather is meeting with the SHRM president from UMD to see if NHRA and the college chapter can work together. It was suggested that
the college chapter partner with NHRA for the fall conference.
- Heather has other ideas for college relations in 2010, including a student mentoring program and internships.
- NHRA Scholarship: post in February.
- Follow up on HR Games (April?).
Community Involvement (Steve Korby):
- We had 4 or 5 community events last year and the same is projected for 2010.
- 2010 NHRA golf fundraiser is scheduled for July 12 at Proctor.
Professional Development/Diversity (Linda Olcott):
- Programs Scheduled:
January - "Fine Line: Balancing Risk versus Reward during a Pandemic";
February - "Is There Benefits to Wellness Programs?"
March - "2010 Employee Law Updates"
April - Student SHRM Chapter
May - Diversity
June - Joint NHRA/ASTD Meeting (Wendy will schedule a meeting to discuss)
- Haiti: Linda received a call from a SHRM member regarding a suggestion to do a NHRA collection to help with relief
efforts in Haiti.
HRCI Certification (Kathy Chalupsky):
- Certification study group starts January 20th through April 28th. It will be held at UMD Campus Center 6 on
Wednesday nights from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm. There are 5 or 6 participants.
- It was suggested that NHRA apply for a $750 scholarship through the SHRM foundation to help with study materials.
Membership & State Conference (B'elana Aedan; Heather Turcotte absent):
- Attending SHRM Leadership conference.
- Ideas for 2010: visit people who don't go to the meetings but are members, visit with business owners, hold a
membership drive and open house.
- Has communicated with the workshop coordinator for the Small Business Center/Economic Development regarding
workforce readiness.
- Would like NHRA to come to the workforce center to assist with job readiness.
Legislative and Government Affairs (Wayne Lindberg):
- Minnesota and Wisconsin updates have been posted online.
- Implement quarterly report at monthly education meetings.
Marketing (Patricia Stolee):
- NHRA was in the news regarding the monthly educational meeting. A link to the story has been placed on the NHRA website.
- Duluth News Tribune is going to start charging for the calendar. The cost is $15 per month. Patricia would like to continue doing what we
are and see if not having it in the calendar affects attendance.
Workforce Readiness (Judy Aspling):
Participated in a workforce readiness conference call last month regarding hiring military. Will be participating in
another conference call at the end of January.
Continuing Business:
- 2010 State Conference Update: A mailing went out to 750 people for speakers; working on an RFP for website and registration; going out
for vendors in February.
- Board Terms: Consider doing planning and turnover of board members earlier in the year. Need to review by-laws this year. Note that not
all board positions are elected positions.
