Northland HRA Monthly Board Meeting
May 20, 2010
Sheraton Hotel, Duluth, MN

Call to order 12:08 p.m.

Present: Linda Olcott, Laurie Pinther, B'elana Aedan, Cindy Potts, Kathy Chalupsky, Donna Bergum, Pam Grover, Heather Duval, Judy Aspling

Absent: Wendy Sersha, Steve Korby, Wayne Lindberg, Terri McGillvrey

Approved April 2010 Minutes

Treasurer's Report (Pam Grover):

  • Financials were approved as submitted: Total Checking / Savings / PayPal - $36,375.32
  • PayPal is requiring proof of our 501c3 status. Pam will find it in our stored records.
  • We have a number of unpaid memberships. Cindy and B'elana agreed to follow up on them. We may not reach our membership growth goals without them.

College Relations (Heather Duval):

  • Andrew Strom has accepted our 50-hour internship. Initially, he'll be addressing our social networking needs for the state conference. If time allows, we'll ask him to help in those efforts for the chapter, as well. We agreed to pay him in full at the end of the summer rather than wait until after the conference.

Community Involvement (Steve Korby, absent):

  • Flyers for the golf outing are done and posted to our Website.

Professional Development/Diversity (Linda Olcott):

  • We received good feedback from our May educational meeting featuring Mary Cameron on diversity. June's meeting will be presented along with ASTD. We will host this year and will coordinate with them to be sure we have adequate room reserved at the Holiday.

HRCI Certification (Kathy Chalupsky):

  • Class is done for this year. Three people plan to take the test this summer. We agreed to apply for a SHRM scholarship for new study materials.

Membership (B'elana Aedan):

  • B'elana presented the updated list of membership initiatives.
  • Discussed whether we want to continue with plans for an October membership effort. Tabled to June.
  • B'elana will be leaving the area and her post on the board. She hopes to be able to pass the baton to the new Membership Director. Laurie will ask the at-large members if they have interest in filling the position. Andrea Smith has also expressed an interested in joining the board and may be a candidate for the job.
  • This year we have 11 new members and one returning member for a net gain of only three.

Legislative and Government Affairs (Wayne Lindberg, absent):

  • Wayne participated in a conference call to plan a Day at the Capitol to be held in August

Marketing (Cindy Potts):

  • Cindy is working with Terri to decide on a chapter promotion to give away at the state conference.
  • The promotional material for the golf outing is distributed.
  • Discussed and decided not to allow advertising by LinkStar on our Website.

Workforce Readiness (Judy Aspling):

  • Judy participated in the SHRM Workforce Readiness conference call in April. One of the suggestions made was to get to know our local Workforce Investment Boards. We're well on track with this as Cindy Potts and Kevin Snyder are on the Duluth WIB, and Judy is on the Northwest Wisconsin WIB. Other initiatives are also on track.

SAt-Large (Donna Bergum; Sandy Plante, absent):

  • Nothing to report.

New Business:

  • Agreed to team with the Arrowhead chapter to produce a current salary survey.

Adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
