Opportunity to E-mentor students in area schools

Subject: Opportunity to E-mentor students in area schools
Greetings,
I received information regarding the Northland Human Resource Association from
Georgia Robillard at Lake Superior College. Georgia and I have served on committees
together with the focus of employment for youth in the Duluth area. I am a project
coordinator at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. One of our funded projects
is through the State of Minnesota Pathways to Employment Grant. This project,
called E-Connect, works with high school special education programs throughout the
state to establish mentoring relationships for young adults ages 16-21 who are
preparing for employment and the adult world. This focus of this project is on
employment and employment ready skills. The project is unique in that the mentoring
relationship is established through e-mail exchange with a couple of school arranged
face to face visits.
Here how it works:
- We help schools connect with local employers to form a mentoring
partnership, with employees committed to spend a short period of time each week
corresponding with students via e-mail. There is usually only one e-mail exchange a
week and the weekly time commitment for the mentor is about 15-20 minutes per week,
- Teachers guide and monitor the process, integrating the mentoring
experience into class activities and into career exploration and awareness.
- As well as connecting the project participants with other resources and
information to support transition, University staff provide training to the
e-mentors and technical support to the project
- During the school year the mentors and students meet face-to-face at
structured, school-sponsored events (typically one of these meetings is hosted at
the business and one at the school)
- The Pathways to Employment team provides support for the project
activities and training for e-mentors. The E-Connect project website contains the
curricula for the program at:
http://ici.umn.edu/mnhighschoolhightech/default.html
- The time commitment for mentors is limited to: a one-time training of 45
minutes on the E-Connect program and the boundaries of e-mentoring, one e-mail
exchange with a student per week (approximate time; 15-20 minutes 1 time per week),
one visit by the students to see where the mentors work (approximate time: 1 hour),
one visit to the school for the mentors to see the student's program (approximate
time at the school; 1 hour)
This fall we will have 13 schools in the Arrowhead region who will be running
E-Connect e-mentoring programs. We are looking for businesses in the community to
provide e-mentors for these schools. I would be interested in making a short
presentation to the Northland Human Resource Association with the hopes that some of
your member businesses might be interested. I have attached an informational flyer
on the program. Thank you for your consideration; I look forward to hearing from
you. You may reach me by phone at: (612) 626-0335 or by e-mail at:
ssmule@umn.edu.

HR Professional Needed to Present at April 9th Job Fair
The Duluth Workforce Center is looking for an HR Professional to present to their
"Getting the Most Out of a Job Fair" workshop(s) this week April 9th from 10am to
12pm and next week April 13th from 1pm-3pm. The volunteer would only need to be
present at the workshop for a short time (whatever fits in your schedule!) to give
attendees tips on how to present themselves well at a job fair. This is in
preparation for the Northland Job Fair to be held on April 15th at the Miller Hill
Mall.
Please contact: belana.aedan@state.mn.us
or 723.4711 if you are interested. Thank you!
